Frequently Asked Questions

HOW DO I GET STARTED AND WHAT IS THE FIRST SESSION LIKE?

Once we have spoken during the initial telephone conversation and agree to book in our first session, I will provide you with a contract of my working agreement and a map of how to find me via email. If we are working online a link will be sent 24 hours prior to your appointment. During our first session, you have the opportunity to get a feel for how I work and for me to understand what brings you to counselling.  In the first session I will complete an ‘intake form’ with you, which will enable me to learn more about you and what brings you to therapy. Should you decide to proceed with me, we will arrange a day and time that works for you each week, although that does depend on your circumstances and if necessary, we can make each new appointment as we go.

HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED AND HOW OFTEN ARE SESSIONS?

I would normally recommend a minimum of 6 sessions in order to have any therapeutic benefit but it is not unusual for clients to continue on a longer term basis. At least for the initial 6 sessions it is more beneficial to meet weekly and this can be reviewed as we go. Other clients prefer to work in a more open ended way until they feel ready to end, which can sometimes mean reducing sessions to twice a month.

THE ISSUES THAT I HAVE ARE NOT LISTED ON YOUR WEBSITE, CAN I STILL COME AND SEE YOU?

The issues listed are by no means exhaustive, so please don't hesitate to get in touch if you just want to check out whether I can help with whatever it is that is troubling you.  If I feel that my skill set would not be appropriate for your needs, I would always try and sign post you in the right direction.

HOW DO I PAY?

I normally ask Clients to make a bank transfer 24 hours prior to a session but it is also possible to pay in cash if preferred. Bank details will be provided within the email sent prior to the first session.

DO YOU OFFER DISCOUNTS?

I do offer discounted rates which I would be happy to discuss with you.

ARE OUR SESSIONS CONFIDENTIAL?

I abide by the BACP's strict code of ethics surrounding confidentiality and so please be assured that our sessions take place in utmost confidentiality. As with all counsellors and therapists, I have a supervisor but I do not disclose your full name during supervision.  Circumstances in which I may break confidentiality would be if I felt you were at harm to yourself or someone else or if there were a child protection issue but I would always try, if possible, to speak to you first.
